Beyoncé posted a new video for her song “Freedom” on Facebook to bring awareness to International Day of the Girl. The clip features young women all over the world dancing and lip-synching to the powerful track, as horrifying statistics bring to light the plight of many girls while challenging the viewer toward action. The video was co-produced with the advocacy organizations Chime for Change and The Global Goals.

International Day of the Girl Child is a worldwide holiday celebrated every year since 2012 on October 11. The United Nations set the date in 2011 with resolution 66/170, declaring, “Empowerment of and investment in girls are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights.”

A statement from UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova covering the international advocacy day cites that “…humanitarian crises always hurt women and girls the most — they account for more than 75 percent of the refugees and displaced persons at risk from war, famine, persecution and natural disaster…No society will flourish and no peace agreement will be lasting without empowering girls in peacebuilding and reconstruction.”

Beyonce’s new video puts a face to the numbers, the most shocking perhaps being that a girl dies every five minutes due to violence, while one in four girls is married while still a child, human trafficking victims are 71 percent female, girls are twice as likely to contract HIV, and 63 million girls have been the victim of female genital mutilation. In closing, the video asks viewers to help reach a series of global goals for the year 2030, including school for all and putting an end to all forms of violence, child marriage, and the worldwide HIV and AIDS epidemic.
