Chris Cornell, founding member of cult bands Soundgarden and Audioslave — who was credited as being one the principle players in the rise of grunge music — has died, aged 52.

Brian Bumbery, Mr. Cornell’s representative issued a statement confirming that the singer had died on Wednesday night in Detroit, saying that his death was “sudden and unexpected” and that the artist’s family would be “working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.”

During an interview a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department said that officers responded to a call from the MGM Grand casino to an apparent suicide of a white man, born July 20th, 1964. The man was pronounced dead on the scene. Whilst the Detroit Police Department would not confirm the victim’s name; Chris Cornell’s date of birth matches that of the deceased.

The police would not confirm that the victim died of suicide, but stated that after the officers forced entry into the room he was found with a band around his neck, and their preliminary determination was an “apparent suicide.”

Chris Cornell was born in 1964 in Seattle. His band, Soundgarden was formed 20 years later. Signed to Sub Pop, which was a fledgling company at the time, the band’s first single “Hunted Down” was released in 1987. The debut album Ultramega OK was released a year later.

In 1991 Seattle was gaining increasing traction as a city generating the core players of the grunge scene, Soundgarden’s album Badmotorfinger saw the band generate the center of a movement that also included Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Soundgarden achieved three studio album of platinum status, Superunknown — released in 1994 — contained some of the band’s best-loved songs, “Black Hole Sun”, “Fell on Black Days”, “Spoonman”, and “My Wave”. Though they disbanded in 1997 the group, including bassist Ben Shepherd, guitarist Kim Thayil, and the drummer Matt Cameron, reunited in 2010 and had been performing together since then.

Just hours before his death Chris Cornell had performed with Soundgarden at the Fox Theater in Detroit on Wednesday night. They had been scheduled to perform at the Rock the Range Festival in Columbus, Ohio on Friday night.

During his career Chris Cornell had acknowledged continuing drug use throughout his life. In a 1994 interview with Rolling Stone Magazine he described himself as a “Daily drug user at 13” who had quit by the age of 14.

Following the initial break-up of Soundgarden in 1997 the singer returned to heavy drug use, telling the Guardian in 2009 that he considered himself a “pioneer” in the abuse of OxyContin, a prescription opiate. He said he’d been through rehab.

In the following years after Soundgarden disbanded Chris Cornell released five solo albums, and he contributed to the soundtrack of Cameron Crowe’s movie Singles which took place in Seattle. He also performed with other members of the band in the film.

In 2001, after lead singer Zack de la Rocha left Rage Against The Machine Chris Cornell joined the members of the band and formed a new outfit, Audioslave. Before announcing it’s split in 2007 the band had released three albums.

In November of 2016 Chris Cornell joined another supergroup. Temple of the Dog featured members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and was formed 25 years ago as a tribute to Andrew Wood — lead singer of Seattle bands Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun. Wood had died of a heroin overdose in March of 1990.

It’s certain that more details of Mr. Cornell’s passing will be confirmed in the coming days.
