Mark E Smith’s family confirm cause of death

Mark E Smith died after battling terminal cancer, his family have confirmed in a new statement.

The Fall frontman and cult icon passed away in January at the age of 60. Read NME‘s obituary for Mark E Smith.

Upon announcing the news of Smith’s passing, the singer’s manager stated last month that a “more detailed” statement would follow.

Now, Smith’s three sisters have issued a statement via the band’s website, revealing that he had been diagnosed with terminal lung and kidney cancer, which left him with “horrible side effects”.

“Mark fought a long and hard battle after his diagnosis of terminal lung and kidney cancer,” the statement reads. “He took every treatment going, which could be brutal at times and left Mark with some horrible side effects. Mark was such a strong man and hated letting his fans down and tried to carry on regardless against all advice.”

The statement adds: “Mark is at peace now and pain free, but we, his three sisters have been left heartbroken and will miss our big brother very much.”

Read the statement in full below:

“We would like to thank family, friends and fans for all their kind words, condolences and memories about our brother Mark.

Also, the N.H.S and staff who treated Mark throughout and Mark’s partner Pam who loved, cared and cherished our brother.

Mark fought a long and hard battle after his diagnosis of terminal lung and kidney cancer.  He took every treatment going, which could be brutal at times and left Mark with some horrible side effects. Mark was such a strong man and hated letting his fans down and tried to carry on regardless against all advice.

Mark had a great life and loved and lived it to the full and always by his own rules and we, as his sisters were privileged to be part of it too.

Mark is at peace now and pain free, but we, his three sisters have been left heartbroken and will miss our big brother very much.

Barbara, Suzanne and Caroline.”

Salford-born Smith formed The Fall in 1976 after attending a Sex Pistols gig at the Manchester Free Trade Hall. They released their debut EP ‘Bingo-Master’s Break Out!’ two years later and would go on to become one of the most influential post-punk bands. Ever prolific, The Fall eventually released 32 studio albums, the most recent being last year’s ‘New Facts Emerge’.
