New Book on Ottoman and Western Satire

13. Mai. 2016

Dr. Elif Elmas, former PhD student of the Cluster “Asia and Europe”, has published a book on Ottoman and Western caricature covering the timespan of the Balkan Crises in the 19th century. The monograph “Die Balkankrise von 1875 bis 1878 im Spiegel osmanischer und westlicher Karikaturen“ is the publication of her dissertation which she carried out within research project B1 “Satire“.

The book deals with Ottoman satire between 1875 and 1878. It focuses on satirical Ottoman periodicals like Hayal and Çaylak, as well as on the influence of the European satire magazines on them. Furthermore, the book shows how the Russian-Ottoman war of 1977/78 is reflected in European and Ottoman satire magazines.

The book was published by Peter Lang International Academic Publishers in 2016 and is part of the series “Geschichte und Kultur des modernen Vorderen Orients. History of Culture of the Modern Near and Middle East” -Volume 38.

Dr. Elmas was doctoral student of research project B1 “Gauging Cultural Asymmetries: Asian Satire and the Search for Identity in the Era of Colonialism and Imperialism”. The project examined the production of satire in South, East and West Asian traditions during the high tide of European colonialism and imperialism, i.e. the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. The project was coordinated by: Prof. Hans Harder, Prof. Michael Ursinus, Prof. Judit Árokay, Prof. Gita Dharampal-Frick, Prof. Susanne Enderwitz and Prof. Barbara Mittler.
