Princeton’s research community on migration awarded Mellon grant

Migration: People and Cultures Across Borders,” an interdisciplinary research community at Princeton, has been awarded a Sawyer Seminar grant from the Mellon Foundation.

Sandra Bermann (left), the Cotsen Professor in the Humanities and professor of comparative literature, and Stephen Macedo, the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Politics and the University Center for Human Values, discuss “Migration: People and Cultures Across Borders,” an interdisciplinary research community at Princeton, which has been awarded a Sawyer Seminar grant from the Mellon Foundation.

The migration research community is a three-year project that includes 22 core faculty and is supported by the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. In this video, Sandra Bermann, the Cotsen Professor in the Humanities, professor of comparative literature and the coordinator of the research community, and Stephen Macedo, the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Politics and the University Center for Human Values, discuss some of the events, courses (on campus and abroad) and other academic opportunities associated with the research community, which also involve undergraduate and graduate students in innovative ways.

The Mellon Foundation’s Sawyer Seminars were established in 1994 to provide support for comparative research on the historical and cultural sources of contemporary developments. They bring together faculty, visitors, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students from a variety of fields mainly, but not exclusively, in the humanities and social sciences, for intensive study of subjects chosen by the participants. Sawyer Seminars are, in effect, temporary research centers.
