Radiohead wrote “Lift” for their seminal album OK Computer, released in 1997, but didn’t officially release the track until featuring it as an out-take on OK Computer‘s 20th anniversary reissue, OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017. The reissue also featured two other unreleased tracks, “I Promise” and “Man of War”, both of which received music videos earlier this summer.

The new video for “Lift”, directed by Oscar Hudson, features frontman Thom Yorke carrying two grocery bags throughout a confusingly monotonous elevator ride that he shares with other passengers including an old lady, bustling businessmen, repairmen, alternating between wide open loneliness and claustrophobic crampedness as Yorke’s vocals defocus.

Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien revealed the song’s history and why it was left off of OK Computer at the time: “[Lift] was a big, anthemic song. If that song had been on that album, it would have taken us to a different place, and we’d have probably sold a lot more records, if we’d done it right, and everyone was saying this. I think we kind of subconsciously killed it, because if ‘OK Computer’ had been like a ‘Jagged Little Pill’, like Alanis Morrissette, it would have killed us. But ‘Lift’ probably had the potential, if we’d done it right, it just had this magic about it. And we didn’t do a good version, because when we got to the studio and did it on that record it was a bit like having a gun to your head, it felt like so much pressure.”

The song’s 2017 release is thanks to XL Recordings’ 2016 purchase of Radiohead’s back catalogue from EMI Records, though the decision of what exactly to release on OKNOTOK was eventually made by the band members themselves.
