Read Taylor Swift’s powerful poem of ‘reinvention’ for Vogue

Taylor Swift appears on the cover of the new January issue of British Vogue – but has opted to write a poem instead of conducting a traditional interview.

Swift, who last month released her acclaimed sixth album ‘Reputation‘, features in a glossy 12-page spread in the magazine. However rather than be subject to interview, she’s written prose “on the timely subject of reinvention and moving on”.

The opening lines of the poem encapsulate its themes. Read the intro below and check out the full thing here.

“Let go of the ones who hurt you
Let go of the ones you outgrow
Let go of the words they hurl your way
as you’re walking out the door
The only thing cut and dry
In this hedge-maze life
Is the fact that their words will cut
but your tears will dry”

Speaking of the issue, Swift wrote in Instagram: “Thank you @edward_enninful and @mertalas for your passion, spirit, and contagious laughter on set. Mert and Marcus took these photos for @britishvogue and my album photos for reputation, and it’s been such a bonding experience working together so closely and talking so much about what we wanted to make.

“It’s been a while since I’ve done a magazine cover. I’m really happy my first one back was with such wonderful people.”

“Obviously she is a world-class lyricist – and has written a stunning poem just for Vogue – but she also takes her duties as a role model very seriously,” said British Vogue editor Edward Enninful.

“Taylor is acutely aware of her following and how she communicates with young women, and will never portray a character that would send the wrong message.”

He continued: “That said, even superstars aren’t immune to the power of a great dress. Taylor says she has never seen herself transformed like this before, and I was very touched to see how emotional she was at the end of our shoot day in London.”

Enninful added: For me, the chance to help transform America’s most fascinating sweetheart was a joy. As we took the pop icon on an epic fashion journey with photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, what struck me most about Taylor was her brilliant sense of humour, but also how, for a woman in her twenties, she has an incredible sense of who she is.”

Meanwhile, Swift has also been named one of Time Magazine’s ‘People Of The Year 2018‘. For the stand she took in her court battle against a radio DJ who sued after she accused him of groping her, Swift was listed as one of ‘The Silence Breakers’ who blew the whistle on systemic sexual assault. She was honoured alongside Tarana Burke, Ashley Judd, Susan Fowler, Adama Iwu, Isabel Pascual, Terry Crews, Rose McGowan and more.

She also used the opportunity to share her support and advice for fellow victims of sexual assault.

Last week saw Swift’s new album ‘Reputation’ finally added to streaming services. The record arrived on services including Spotify and Apple Music at just after midnight, with a video posted on the Taylor Nation twitter account confirming that it was ‘available tonight on all streaming services’.

The rest of Taylor’s back catalogue is available on streaming services too, but only since she returned it in June, having previously withdrawn it after voicing her opposition to advertisement based streaming.
