The University of Barcelona is the first public institution in Spain that joins Electronics Watch, an independent monitoring organisation working to achieve respect for labour rights in the global electronics industry. The University of Barcelona and other European public institutions join forces to improve working conditions in the supply chain of big electronic companies and achieve an independent supervision of factories. The University of Barcelona, a public higher education institution committed to social responsibility, invest substantially in electronic equipment: computers, laptops and many other electronic devices. As a member of Electronic Watch, it will recommend its suppliers to supervise working conditions in the supply chain in order to improve them.

Thanks to the membership of Electronics Watch, the University of Barcelona will include some clauses in purchase agreements that will strengthen supply chain transparency. Clauses bind contractors to fulfil a labour code and have factories monitored by Electronics Watch. The collaboration between Electronics Watch and the University of Barcelona supports the rest of institutions involved in an initiative that can create significant leverage to influence structural improvement in the industry.
