Toshi Book Prize for Lothar Ledderose

Toshi Book Prize for Lothar Ledderose

21. Sep. 2015

Prof. Dr. Lothar Ledderose and Hua Sun receive the 2015 Toshihide Numata Book Prize for their edited volume “Buddhist Stone Sutras in China, Sichuan Province, Volume 1”. The “Toshi” Prize is annually awarded to an outstanding book in the area of Buddhist Studies and administered by the Center for Buddhist Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. Lothar Ledderose is senior professor for East Asian Art History at Heidelberg University and former project coordinator at the Cluster “Asia and Europe”. The prize-winning book is based on the research of an international  team led by Prof. Ledderose. It consists of a group at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and specialists from Peking University as well as from the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology at Chengdu.

The Toshihide Numata Book Prize is selected by an external committee on an annual basis. It is administered by the Center for Buddhist Studies, University of California, Berkeley, and includes a prize money of $10,000. The members of this year’s committee were enthusiastic in their praise of Buddhist Stone Sutras in China. One member wrote that it is “opening a new chapter in the study of Chinese Buddhist ‘Stone Sutras’, by establishing a very fruitful methodological approach to these complex sources. As such, it has far-reaching positive implications for the field at large and represents (especially as part of a general project) an important contribution to the study of Chinese Buddhism as a whole, encompassing areas as diverse as textual studies, archaeology, religious practices and material culture.” Another commented that it “represents a model of successful cooperation between Chinese and Western scholars; the bilingual presentation is particularly noteworthy from this point of view, as it makes the book accessible to a wider scholarly public.”

The award presentation ceremony will take place at the University of California, Berkeley, in October 2015. Professors Lothar Ledderose and Hua Sun will give keynote addresses followed by a symposium on stone sutras. The programme will include presentations by Martin Bemmann, Manuel Sassmann, Jessica Rawson and Claudia Wenzel  (all affiliated with the Stone Sutra research project at Heidelberg University), as well as Ryan Overbey (Wesleyan University) and Dorothy C. Wong (University of Virginia).

The publication “Buddhist Stone Sutras in China, Sichuan Province, Volume 1” is edited by Lothar Ledderose and Hua Sun (Wiesbaden/Hangzhou: Harrassowitz Verlag/China Academy of Art Press, 2014). The volume is bilingual in Chinese and English and directed at a wide audience. It is part of the book series “Buddhist Stone Sutras in China” edited by Lothar Ledderose.
