U2 delayed last night’s Buenos Aires performance of their The Joshua Tree Tour so that local fans could watch their national soccer team compete in a desperate final match of World Cup qualifying play. Argentina hasn’t missed the World Cup in 48 years, and the Lionel Messi-led team faced a must-win situation against rivals Ecuador. U2 announced their show would begin following the match’s conclusion.

Producer Daniel Grinbank told Argentinian paper La Nacion, “Can you imagine what the show’s going to be like if Argentina wins? And if we lose, at least we can get rid of the bitterness with a great show. You can’t go wrong.”

Screens at La Plata Stadium, the Buenos Aires venue, showed the game following a live show by U2’s openers, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, who performed just before kick-off. The delay for U2 ended up being almost two hours. Luckily, Argentina’s brilliant forward recorded three goals in the match to complete a come-from-behind victory and cement the team’s high World Cup hopes.

Tensions had been running so high in the South American nation that the National Health Ministry published a guide to help fans avoid heart attack during what could have been a stressful 90 minutes or more of play. Tips included avoiding sugary and fatty foods, as well as alcoholic beverages.

U2 wraps up their 2017 world tour with a visit to Santiago, Chile, and then four dates in Sao Paolo, Brazil, later this month, all opened by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Noel Gallagher, fresh off his band’s announcement of their new album, Who Built The Moon, described touring with U2, “It’s been amazing. They’ve been absolutely brilliant every night. They’re one of my favourite ever bands, ever.”
