Vic & Bob’s ‘Big Night Out’ to return over Christmas

The surreal comedy Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out is set to return over the festive period, it has been announced.

Originally broadcast on Channel 4 in 1990, the show was a TV adaptation of material performed by Vic  Bob at comedy clubs in the early days of their career. Now, after 25 years off the air, a half-hour special will be shown on BBC Two.

The one-off show, now titled Vic Bob’s Big Night Out, will include classic sketches from the show’s original run – along with new features, musical numbers, skits and stunts.

When announced earlier this year, the duo said that “the time is right” for the revival.

The special is also set to feature a guest appearance from Little Britain star Matt Lucas. The comedian worked previously with the duo on the bizarre celebrity panel show Shooting Stars, playing the drumming baby George Dawes.

Shooting Stars was revived back in 2009, but was cancelled again in 2011. The final series saw long-running team captain Ulrika Jonsson up against Jack Dee – though Lucas did not return as Dawes.

Earlier this year, viewers criticised the BBC’s Comic Relief broadcast after a sketch in which Vic Reeves appeared to flash a fake penis aired before the 9pm watershed.

As part of the charity broadcast, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer teamed up with Good Morning Britain‘s Susanna Reid for a comedy skit. While Reeves was asking Reid if she had “seen Kong”, referring to new movie Kong: Skull Island, a prosthetic penis seemed to appear between Reeves’ legs.

On Twitter, viewers called the sketch “inappropriate”, “embarrassing” and “cringe” – though Bob Mortimer responded, saying: “Newspapers and media are telling you Vic reeves flashed a fake penis on comic relief. IT IS A LIE. 100% FABRICATION.”
