Watch how ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ was originally going to begin

A Star Wars fan has recreated director JJ Abrams’ original The Force Awakens opening scene, to show how the sci-fi epic would have alternately started.

While the final cut of the movie opens with an Imperial fleet preparing to attack the plenty Jakku, Abrams’ original vision and storyboard was for the film to begin with republic vessels towing an Imperial Star Destroyer into the gravitational pull of Jakku. It would then crash, before Rey surfaced to scavenge the wreckage. While parts of the sequence did make it into the film, mystery surrounds why it was dropped from the opening.

Now, animator Tim Grey has recreated the original opening sequence. Check it out below.

Meanwhile, Star Wars was recently hit with a backlash following a report claiming that 96% of its universe writers and directors have been white men.

It was announced this week that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss have been given the green light to write and produce a brand new series of Star Wars movies.

Following the news, Variety‘s Maureen Ryan calculated that in 41 years, and over released or planned 17 theatrical films, 24 people were hired to direct, write or be the “creative lead” on Star Wars feature films, with 23 of those being white males.

Meanwhile, anticipation also gathers around the upcoming spin-off movie Solo: A Star Wars Story.
